Addams Family Pinball Machine

The Addams Family pinball machine is the best selling pinball machine since the 1930s, having sold 20,270 units. Manufactured by Midway (under the Bally name), it is a solid state electronic game. It was based on the 1991 movie of the same name, and features custom speech (mostly drawn from the movie) by the movie’s stars, Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston.

The machine’s game card describes the game objective as being to “Explore the strange world of the Addams Family.” With that in mind there is no single player goal, though there are two central objectives:

• The Mansion: The Addams Family mansion is located in the center of the playfield and has 12 “windows”. Each window corresponds to a different room that the player can enter and receive an award for.
• Vault Multiball: In the top-right section of the playfield is a blue bookcase, representing the bookcase that Gomez shows Uncle Fester in the movie. Hits to it award letters in the word “Greed”. Once the word is completed, like in the movie, the bookcase turns, revealing a shot to the vault behind the bookcase (it is possible but rare for a ball to go into the vault when the bookcase is in the blocking position). A shot to the vault locks the ball for future multiball use, or starts the multiball when two balls have been previously locked. The bookcase also opens access to the vault at certain other times during the mini games, with varying scores and effects.

Attack from Mars pinball machine is a 1995 game designed by Brian Eddy, and released by Midway (under the Bally label).

In this game, Martians began to invade the Earth, and it’s up to the player to destroy the Martian fleet, save all the major cities, and then head off to Mars to destroy the Martian empire and conquer Mars.

Among the game’s noted features include four dancing Martian figures and a strobe light (for Strobe Multiball).

Objectives:

• Super Jets: You have to score a certain amount of hits on the pop bumpers to light Super Jets (worth 3 million points per hit).
• 5-Way Combo: During regular gameplay, you have to make consecutive shots at any lit loops or ramps to score a combo, before the lights go out.
• Super Jackpot: During regular multiball, score all five jackpot shots with at least two balls in play to light the Super Jackpot, which continusly roves at any of the five jackpot shots.
• Martian Multiball: Successfully kill all four Martians during “Martian Attack”, and a second ball is launched into play for Martian Multiball.
• Total Annihilation: Clear the left and right loops, as well as the left and right ramps, for Total Annihilation Multiball, a four-ball multiball.
• Conquer Mars: Defend all the major cities, and then you head off to Mars to confront the Martian Empire.

When all six of these objectives are met, shoot the “Stroke of Luck” scoop to start Rule the Universe, a four-ball wizard mode. In this mode, everything is lit, and the objective is to score 5 billion points with at least two balls in play, and if you succeed, you will score an extra 5 billion points.

The drop targets look like the round stationary targets used in many other games. Has speech recorded entirely in Spanish on an 8-track cartridge. Different speech phrases would play at random, and other specific phrases such as “Don’t shake me” (if tilted) were played at a corresponding moment. Some phrases were spoken just before starting a new ball and every time the ball entered the upper playfield kick-out hole. Also, the attract mode could be set to play a phrase every 10 minutes (time interval estimated)

Creature from the Black Lagoon Pinball

Creature from the Black Lagoon pinball machine was designed by John Trudeau (“Dr. Flash”) and released by Midway (under the Bally brand name). It is loosely based on the movie of the same name. The game’s theme is 1950’s drive-in theater. Its major feature is a holographic creature, set in the middle of the playfield, that lights up and waves its “hand” back and forth during multiball play. The holograph is set behind a green plastic insert, so that the monster appears green. The game was licensed from Universal Studios by Bally so that the backglass artwork, the cabinet artwork, and the creature looked like the original movie actors and monsters.

NBA Fastbreak pinball machine has scoring like the real NBA, meaning that 300 points is a terrific score. The scoring is balanced, and completely linear. That in itself is a major difference from other pinball machines. Additionally it is the only WPC machine that does not feature an after ball bonus count. The objective of NBA Fastbreak is to get to Trophy Multiball by completing six tasks, win a championship ring, and score as many points as possible along the way. The six tasks are:

• Goals (2PT, 3PT & Free Throw)
• 20 points
• Combos (Tip-Off, Slam Dunk, Alley Oop & Fastbreak)
• Stadium Goodies (Crazy Bob’s Concessions, Hot-Dog Mania, Scoreboard Trivia & Egyptian Soda)
• Multiballs (Shoot Around Multiball & Around The World Multiball)
• Power Hoops and Power Points (Half Court Hoops, Hook Shot Hoops, Run & Shoot Hoops & Hoops Multiball)

When all the tasks are completed, Trophy Multiball automatically starts (if you lose the ball before it starts, it will start on the next ball). The player then has unlimited balls for about 20 seconds. The center ramp is lit for 2 points and the goal is to outscore the “other team” (it seems like 6 or 7 shots are necessary to do this). If the player wins, a championship ring is awarded and the player becomes the current MVP.

Multiball, Backglass Animation, Playfield Magnet(s), Moving Target, Ramp(s), Voice, More Than 2 Flippers

The mechanical backbox animation consists of a flipper in the lower right part of the backbox and a basket on the far left side. The game controls the backbox flipper sometimes when points are scored. For instance, after a set amount of pop bumper hits, during multiball, and during the Egyptian Soda and Hot Dog Mania modes. The exception is Pizza Power Shots mode. In this mode, the player tries to score as many points as possible in the backbox basket. This is done by flipping the backbox flipper at the right moment. A basket shot can be worth 1, 2 or 3 points, depending on the amount shown in the score display at the moment of hitting the basket switch.

World Cup Soccer by Bally

World Cup Soccer pinball machine is based on the 1994 FIFA World Cup. It is a great family pinball machine for those with kids who play sports.

Game Features:

Flippers (2), Pop bumpers (3), Ramps (2), Rollunder spinner (1), Kickback. Magna-Save located on playfield above the left flipper is activated by extra button on left side of cabinet. Magna-Lock located on middle-left playfield magnetically holds balls for multiball play. A goalie target moves from side to side at top-left playfield. Toys include a large, hemispherical soccer ball at upper-right playfield spins in both directions to alter the path of a ball striking it.

Theatre of Magic is a pinball machine produced by Midway (under the Bally brand name).

Main mission is to get to the “Grand Finale” by finishing:

• Theatre: The easiest sub-mission, simply complete “T-H-E-A-T-R-E” (which also lights Theatre Hurry Up) by shooting the left loop.
• Multiball: Collect Theatre Multiball (to light the locks in the inner loop, shoot the ramps to complete “M-A-G-I-C”).
• Midnight: Advance the clock to Midnight (shoot right loop).
• Illusions: The hardest of the four goals. Shoot the trunk to light one of the following missions. Start them all to finish this sub-mission. Tiger Saw Hit the Captive Ball for various animations of a tiger using the saw on different items.
  • Levitating Woman Shoot the Center Ramp to score (11 million, increasing by one million each time).
  • Trunk Escape Shoot the Magic Trunk for four times to break the chains of a locked trunk.
  • Spirit Cards Shoot the Inner Loops/Spinner to award increasing points (500,000 per spin, increases by 250,000 each time the loop is shot).
  • Safe Escape Shoot the Inner Loops to unlock the safe.
  • Metamorphosis Shoot the Right Ramp to transform the assistant to various animals (12 million, increasing by four million each time).
  • Strait Jacket Escape the strait jacket as spikes are closing in. Hit the jet bumpers to push the hand closer to the freeing buckle (6 million per bumper, 60 million to finish it).
  • Hat Magic Shoot the trunk for different things being pulled out of the hat.

The game uses the DCS Sound System.

Game Features:

Rotating trunk with magnet, Tiger Saw Multiball (2), Trunk Multiball (3), Trunk Multiball w/Vanish Lock (4), Magna save (2), Levitating ball. The magic trunk on the playfield, levitates ball (with magnet) and makes it “disappear” to start multi-ball. The “Spirit Ring”, a round magnet which grabs the ball from the left ramp and releases it to the ramp across the playfield. Upper rollovers are hidden from player’s view by the ramps, but can be seen with a mirror on the back panel.

Scared Stiff is a 1996 pinball game designed by Dennis Nordman and released by Midway (under the Bally label), featuring horrorshow-hostess Elvira. It is the follow-up to 1989’s Elvira and the Party Monsters, also designed by Nordman.

The game featues a B-movie horror theme. Players have to go through the Six Tales Of Terror to level up the Stiff-o-meter: Eyes Of The Bony Beast, Terror From The Crate, the Stiff In The Coffin, the Monster’s Lab, Night Of The Leapers, and the Return Of The Deadheads. The interactive backbox contains a player controlled spinning spider. It is used to collect unique features and start special modes. Scared Stiff uses the DCS Sound System.

Cirqus Voltaire Pinball Machine

Cirqus Voltaire is a 1997 pinball game, designed by John Popadiuk and released by Midway Games (under the Bally label). The theme involves the player performing many different marvels in order to join the circus. Some of the captivating features include a neon light running along the right-hand ramp, a pop bumper that rises up from the middle of the playfield at certain times, and a mini-playfield at the top of the center ramp with a magnet to catch the ball for locking. The most notable feature is the Ringmaster, a head that rises at certain times and makes cracks against the player.

It was the first Williams/Bally pinball machine missing a real replay-knocker, a device driven by a coil to produce a loud bang when hammering against the wood of the cabinet or backbox. Instead this sound effect was pre-recorded and played via the regular speakers. It was also the second machine (after Capcom’s Flipper Football, released in 1996) to move the dot-matrix display (DMD) from the backbox right into the cabinet, so the player isn’t distracted from gameplay when watching the DMD (an idea that was taken to the maximum with the Pinball 2000 architecture two years later).

Game Features:

Flippers (2), Pop bumpers (3), Slingshots (2), Stop magnets (3), Standup targets (9), Kick-out holes (2), Spinning targets (2), Speech, Playfield-mounted dot matrix display. The menagerie ball, a large plastic ball trapped within a cage above the left slingshot, can be hit by the ball in play and disrupts ball direction. The Ringmaster is an animated head that elevates from the underside of the playfield and makes wise cracks at the player, who tries to defeat him by hitting him with the pinball in various modes. A stop magnet is on the top of the Ringmaster’s head, holding the ball there when the head rises up. One of the three pop bumpers “disappears” by dropping down until its flat plastic top is level with the playfield. The backbox animation simulates a cannonball fired to ring a bell, although the bell is really just a piece of plastic with a bell drawn on it. This animation is mostly activated automatically by the game but one feature allows the player to continuously fire the cannonball using the flipper buttons in a timed mini-game. Points are given if the ball takes a certain path in the fall (this path having a switch).
